I find it amazing how easy it is to date outside of high school, granted I am an entirely different person than I was ten years ago, but it’s pretty astounding anyone gets together in those mad awkward years in the first place.
There was a really hot blonde guy (we will call him Chris) that sat in front of Niccole in Mr. E’s U.S. Government class. Niccole, Tina, and I would flirt with him every class period until one day Niccole had the ingenious idea to invite him out with us to see the movie, Daredevil.
“Chris, we are going to the opening of Daredevil on Friday if you want to come.”
“Isn’t Friday Valentine’s Day?”
“It is, you’re right. If you don’t have plans you should take Sonya as your DATE!” She said looking at me with the look you give a friend you are “helping,” suggesting that you are being very selfless and doing was is best for your friend because they could not possibly do this on their own. Though Niccole was right I never would have asked him out on my own.
“Sounds like a great time! I will see you there.” He said winking at me.
I pretty much died; I was floored, no one ever wanted to go out with me, and then one of the cutest guys in school agreed to go with me, on Valentine’s Day no less.
Valentine’s Day was upon us quickly. I went straight home after school to change my clothes, put on fresh makeup and fix my hair (which I honestly did not know how to do at the time so it was just a huge puff ball of curly-ish red hair). I picked up Tina in my Dad’s old ass Ford F-350 which I had basically claimed as my own when I turned 16 and we were off for my first date ever.
At the box office we purchased our tickets. Chris paid for his, I paid for mine and Tina’s (I felt bad that she was dateless), and Jose paid for Niccole’s and his. We all talked feverously, excited for the movie that we had been anticipating for a few months, got in line for the concession stand and Chris leaned over to ask “Hey, Jose and I want to get the best seats will you get me a large popcorn and a large coke?”
Before I could respond he was gone. I paid for his requests and precariously carried all my purchases to our seats (near the top row, which I personally think are the shittiest seats in the house… it’s all about third or fourth row center. You know who have the best seats? Handicapped people; they deserve it I just plan my seating around that seating).

The movie was an utter bomb; my date wouldn’t share “his” popcorn with anyone (myself included). I slowly began to hate him, and we weren’t even talking.
When the movie finally ended, we walked outside and talked a bit in a huge group, then we decided to part ways. No one made a move though; we all just stood around silently looking for a cue.
Jose walked up to Chris and said “I will get the hugs started come here man.” He hugged Chris like they were best friends. Jose had a knack for making people feel welcome even when they really weren’t.
“That’s more like it!” Chris said excitedly. He walked up to me and gave me a very sweet hug. I melted a little and then he hugged Tina, which was nice but in my mind completely unnecessary as I was his date and not her. Then he hugged Niccole. He pulled his head back from her body, but kept his arms around her and in front of all of us he asked “Can I give you a ride home?”

I think of that date sometimes, still unsure of what exactly happened. Why I agreed to it in the first place, wondering if he thought Niccole was so easy she would sleep with him while her own boyfriend was standing there, and why it cheese grated my heart as much as it did. I should have dumped his (well technically since I paid for it my) soda on his head and been done with it. Instead I just stood there shaken and saddened as everyone walked away, downing in the wake of a tidal wave I never really invited.
